Securing Scale Through Precision Access

Designing for Secure Delegation at Enterprise Scale
B2B (Business-to-Business) / Desktop Web Application

Challenges
Before Scope-Based Access Control (SBAC) was introduced, HPE OneView relied solely on Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), which imposed significant organizational constraints. Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) enforced broad permissions, preventing true multi-tenancy and making it impossible to safely isolate resources across teams, regions, or business units within a shared appliance.

Organizations were also unable to delegate management of specific or regional resources without granting excessive administrative power, limiting scalability, governance, and secure operational delegation.

Solution
I led the design of the Scope Based Access Control (SBAC) feature working closely with specialist partners, lead engineer and product managers. When completed, the Scope Based Access Control (SBAC) in HPE OneView strengthens organizational control by aligning administrative privileges with real operational boundaries. It enhances security and governance, especially in environments with multiple teams or complex ownership models.

Business Impact
Operationally, Scope Based Access Control (SBAC) improves efficiency and accountability. Administrators can delegate responsibilities to teams or functions without granting broad, appliance-wide access, enabling clearer ownership models and safer delegation. Optimized authorization checks ensure these controls do not introduce performance overhead, allowing teams to move quickly while remaining compliant.

From a productivity standpoint, Scope Based Access Control (SBAC) reduces complexity for end users by filtering the interface to only the resources they are permitted to manage. This reduces cognitive load, speeds navigation, and lowers the likelihood of mistakes. When paired with restricted UI read access, it delivers a focused, task-oriented experience aligned with real-world responsibilities.

Overall, Scope Based Access Control (SBAC) delivers measurable business value by enabling secure multi-team operations on a shared platform, improving operational velocity, reducing risk exposure, and supporting enterprise-scale governance without compromising performance or usability.

Role Sr. User Experience Designer • Team Infrastructure Management Specialist (2), Product Manager (2), Lead Enginneer (1)

Design goal
Informed by customer feedback and end users needs, the goal is to make infrastructure access precise, intentional, and aligned to how modern enterprises actually operate across environments, business units, and geographies. Security becomes an enabler of velocity, not a bottleneck.

Organizations can confidently decentralize operations, empower teams, and scale their environments without increasing risk and HPE OneView to evolve from an infrastructure management tool into a trust platform that allows enterprises to grow safely.
